With yet another school holiday rolling around, and with our travel options still restricted, it’s great to know that there are some fantastic local activities for kids. Check out our guide below for some great options – from drama, art and craft, sailing, swimming and rock school… there’s something for everyone to enjoy!

Kids with Cameras Photography Workshop, Balmoral & Taronga Zoo

If your child, tween or teen, has a love for photography bring your camera or mobile phone and join us for 2 days of adventure learning how to take great photos with international award-winning Australian photographer Jarrod Castaing. For children aged 9-16 years, suitable for all levels of experience and parents are welcome to attend.

This workshop will show you how to use your camera and get creative with your photography. The class will cover a range of topics from composition, lighting and exposure in a practical way. You’ll also learn technical aspects from aperture and shutter speed to focal length. If you love taking photos or want to pursue a career in the creative arts, this is a great class to break into the creative industry.

Date: October 7-8 (this is a two-day activity)

Mosman Art Gallery’s popular Art Attack series is back for the School Holidays. Workshops include Perfect Pets Printmaking, Natural Fabric Dyeing and Mindfulness Photography.

NIDA: TV Presenting @ Taronga Zoo for Grades 3–6

Let their creativity bloom this Spring with NIDA’s TV Presenting @ Taronga Zoo for grades 3–6! As they design and film a television lifestyle program set at Taronga Zoo, watch them develop skills in TV presenting and reporting, enhance their on-screen presence and increase their confidence. All participants will experience an ‘animal encounter’ presented by Taronga Zoo staff and receive a copy of their filmed segment.

Indian Jungle Dance, via Zoom

Join Shyamla Eswaran via Zoom to explore the jungles of South India in this unique movement-based adventure. Through story-telling, fun facts, and first-hand experience, Shy teaches children how to move and act like Indian Animals in the wild. The link to the event will be emailed to all attendees the week before. Suitable for all ages.

Sailing Camps, Middle Harbour Yacht Club

Learn to Sail these Spring Holidays Sailing is the perfect way to get out in the fresh air, learn a new skill, meet new friends and participate in a satisfying and fulfilling sport that can be done in a team or as an individual. MHYC offers a simple training pathway through the Australian Sailing endorsed Tackers (7-12 years) and OutThere Sailing (12-17 years) programs.  All courses are delivered by experienced accredited instructors. No prior sailing skills are necessary.

NIDA Screen Acting Boot Camp for Grades 3–6, Mosman Art Gallery

Spring into action these school holidays with NIDA’s Screen Acting Boot Camp for grades 3–6 at Mosman Art Gallery! Watch your budding artist build their on-screen confidence and develop skills in improvisation, character development and script work in this three-day intensive workshop presented by the National Institute of Dramatic Art.

Beyond! Mental Health Workshop for Teens, Mosman Drill Hall

A free three-day workshop involving students aged 15-18 years and young people with lived experiences of mental health issues, as well as mental health experts. Beyond! is about tuning in to stigma and creating youth mental health community leaders who are empowered to support themselves and their peers.

On day one, hear from young people at Batyr discussing personal experiences and why it is important to break the stigma. On day two, join in the safeTALK nationally accredited training workshop presented by trained facilitators teaching what to do when warning signs of possible suicide are spotted. On day three, there will be an opportunity to tune in to relationships with our friends and peers, exploring how we can best relate to each other with positivity.

Bookings are essential as numbers will be limited to ensure safety of participants and allow the workshops to be immersive, dynamic and comfortable. Lunch will be provided.

Big Music Holiday Rock Camp, Crows Nest

If your child has ever dreamed of being in a rock band, or just really likes music – Big Music in Crows Nest is the place to be these school holidays! Big Music has been running their Holiday Rock Camp program with great success, and all the staff are qualified musicians who are passionate about encouraging a love of music in their students. There’s no musical experience necessary, with a course to suit kids of all ages and any skill level! The emphasis of the camp programs is simply on fun and participation in learning to play popular music with other kids!

Good to Know: Due to Covid-19, we have modified our holiday camp programs to make them CovidSafe for our students, staff, parents and community. These measures include reduced class sizes, breaks between classes to allow time for studio and instrument cleaning and replacing the final concert with live streaming of student performances. Despite these important precautions, our holiday camps are still cool, fun, inspiring and the Ultimate Rock Experience!

Camera Masterclass and Sing & Act Workshop: Bright Sparks Co. Performing Arts School, Crows Nest

The Brightsparks Performing Arts School offer a range of courses to focus on areas that inspire children’s imaginations and boost their confidence. The 3 day Camera Masterclass will be an incredible opportunity for young budding actors to experience a taste of a professional studio working with industry specialists. Cameramen, Photographers and Hair and Make up artists will work together to create a professionally shot and edited show-reel for each child with our in-house editor to create a truly winning video to showcase their talent. If your child is less of a behind the camera personality and prefers to shine on the stage, the ever popular Sing and Act course, is possibly more for them. It’s a fun filled two day extravaganza of singing and drama where children create scenes, dress up to create characters, sing songs from their favourite shows and musicals and perform in the gorgeous Citadel studio. Highly trained and experienced singing and drama teachers will really make their voices soar.

Luna Park 85th Birthday Celebrations
