Mosman Wharf Invigorated by Monstera’s Midas Touch

Boasting a team with a history of smash hit Sydney cafes, Mosman locals are flocking to Monstera for its delicious and Instagrammable food, stunning water views, and commitment to fresh local produce.

Everything Steve Chrun touches – at least in the Sydney cafe scene – turns to gold. His first venture, The Social Room Cafe in Greenwich, set that local community alight with its top notch coffee and mouth watering all day menu. From there, Chrun took over a tiny wharf-based cafe that really put him on the map – Celsius Coffee Co on Kirribilli Wharf. With its stunning harbour backdrop and Instagram-worthy dishes, Celsius quickly developed a cult following that sees daily long queues of local commuters, foodies and international tourists alike.

So when the cafe lease at Mosman Wharf became available, Steve was approached by Roads and Maritime Services about taking it over. Already well versed in small space kitchens and working with the ebbs and flows of a transport stop as your venue, the team seemed the perfect fit for the space. And of course, their knowledge of and creativity with food was the ideal resume for a Mosman location serving hundreds of locals desperate for a great quality cafe.

And so Monstera (named after the plants now hanging in the boat that hangs from the ceiling) was born. And the reception from locals has been overwhelming. “We’re so grateful to the local community for taking us to heart,” says Steve. “And we want them to know we are here to stay.”

Produce is sourced fresh daily – of all people by Steve’s father who visits the markets bright and early on behalf of the cafe. And all dishes are made fresh and in-house, which is an impressive feat in Monstera’s small size kitchen.

The latest menu features the number one item in any cafe owned by Steve – waffles. The Monstera version is laced with berries, honeycomb and lemon marscapone, and if you order this dish you’ll find it impossible not to snap a photo of its beauty. “People love to eat with their eyes,” he points out. And the menu has been designed to capitalise on this.

There’s also burrata and caramelised figs, a pork belly hot dog, the all-green breakfast, or a pasture fed beef burger with pickled jalapenos. And as for the all-important question of coffee – this is provided at Monstera by Canberra roasters ONA.

So if you’re looking for a high quality cafe meal, with produce sourced fresh and locally, and made by a passionate and innovative team… give Monstera a try!
