Humans of Mosman: Stan Kouros (owner of Scoot Kids)

“Myself and my wife Glynis own Scoot Kids, Mosman, which sells clothing, gifts and accessories for babies to 14 years. We opened in August 1986, so this will be our 32nd Christmas serving the people of Mosman. Mosman is a great place to have a small business. Mosman people appreciate design excellence, creativity and quality, and they are really friendly. So many customers still tell us what a beautiful shop we have full of special things. It’s a wonderful feeling to still get that positive feedback after 32 years. Glynis and I are both NIDA graduates and after working in Theatre, Film and TV for a few years we decided to go into our own business for a more regular income in preparation for having our own family. We started in a small 40m2 store in Mosman and grew from there. Our daughters are now 29 and 26! On opening in Mosman we approached designers like Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson whose designs created an immediate impression on Mosman shoppers. Our reputation for new and innovative kidswear full of colour and fun, started from there. The best aspect of the business is definitely the customers and fellow retailers of Mosman, and the relationships you form from the day-to-day contact. The challenges are opening seven days a week and taking the work home with you every night. It’s the bitter-sweet nature of every small business. Over the years, Mosman has grown into a major shopping precinct and tourist destination. When we first opened, the village atmosphere was so appealing. Mosman’s charm was in the quirky, old-fashioned stores run by owner operators. Mosman still retains some of that feeling with its tree-lined strip of shops, but oldies like us get very sentimental about the old Mosman. Some of my favourite businesses are Pages & Pages Bookstore, Little French Patisserie, Harlem & Stone ladies fashion, and Accoutrement kitchen and homewares. Sadly, we are closing Scoot Kids at the end of December. It’s time for a break then a new beginning. Our daughters are very excited to have us free and available to them for a change.

Our plans are to rest, relax and have fun doing new things. After a long holiday we hope to end up helping and guiding other small business owners in the development of their own enterprises. We’d love to say thank you to our wonderful customers and friends! Our start in Mosman was focused on “Fun gear for Fun Kids” and you, our customers, have given us such a fun packed time with lasting friendships and memories. By far our greatest highlight has been growing with families across multiple generations. Seeing parents become grandparents, children grow and leaping into parenthood, all coming through our doors to find that perfect gift for their kids. Thank you for the opportunity to play a small part in the lives of your loved ones. To all our fellow retailers of Mosman and to all our staff who have helped us maintain our great service over the last three decades – thank you for being on this journey with us. We will be here until the end of December, so please come in and say goodbye and we can wish you a happy Christmas for one last time.”
