Chat Thai Launches a Dining/Grocery/Cooking School Concept in Neutral Bay

Locals will be ecstatic to learn that Sydney’s best known Thai restaurant – Chat Thai – has finally opened a Lower North Shore outpost in Neutral Bay. But it’s not just eating in and takeaway you can look forward to… In a first for the brand, the shop is also home to a Thai grocery and cooking school, so you can learn to create their signature dishes yourself.

A New Dining Concept in Neutral Bay

Imagine a local Thai restaurant – famed for its natural organic produce – which offers dine in for 52 patrons plus takeaway and all the major delivery services. Then imagine that restaurant also offers a grocery where you can not only stock up on their most popular dishes frozen and Thai BBQ essentials to take home, but also natural and organic wines, Thai sauces, pastes and spices, gelato from Ciccone & Sons… even a honey said to contain powerful healing properties. Then imagine that restaurant also offers a cooking school where you can learn to create their signature dishes for yourself at home.

Welcome to the new Chat Thai Neutral Bay! It’s a new concept for the famed Thai dining empire, and we think locals are going to love it.

The Chat Thai Story: A Family Affair

After working in one of Sydney’s first Thai restaurants, U-thong in Cammeray, single mother Amy Chanta opened the first Chat Thai on Liverpool Street in 1989. Now with eight stores across Sydney, as well as popular Boon Cafe and an Asian grocer, Jarern Chai, the business has turned into somewhat of an empire. Amy’s daughter runs Boon Luck Farm in Byron Bay where the team grows much of the certified organic Asian produce used in Chat Thai stores. She’s also a budding star on SBS where her 12-part series “Water Heart Food” will premiere in late November. Next year she’ll appear on Gardening Australia and Adam Liaw’s new series.

Palisa and her husband Matt Anderson (who manages the back office) are Mosman based, and have hoped for some time to bring the brand to the Lower North Shore. Since its soft opening in August, and more recent official opening, their two young children have also been known to help out on the floor, showing that the family business is in good hands.
